Can be tricky. I'm the VP of the Board for a charitable foundation and actually oversee executive compensation. Compensation for 501c3 organizations are regulated by the government. If the government is giving you non-profit status and therefore tax exemption, they don't want to see executives with exorbitant salaries. The rationale is that the excess money could be thrown back into programming. I could see executives for the Gates foundation making around $500k-$600k but not much more than that. Foundations like these have boards that are charged with fiscal oversight, so any type of luxurious spending is not really the norm and would have to be justified and approved by the board.
