Yeah, my friend who travels around South America uses it a lot, he's met some bad chicks off there. It's cause Hi5 was bought up by tagged and that was extremely popular in Latin America.

I'm damn near 40 but look in my 20s when face is shaved. Good job as most important have encountered want money..especially if you have no immediate plans to visit. Hope it works out for you when you eventually meet them
I don't think women like that are the exceptions, it's easy to spot the chicks that want money, they're often trying to speak English and promote themselves to English speakers. Maybe you're talking about DR specifically, I never encountered that much in Brazil or Colombia, where as it's much more prevalent in DR. I steer my friends to Colombia or Brazil, and tell them to learn the languages, he speaks Spanish so for him it's easy to get his foot in the door in with women tourists don't have access to, ie Spanish speakers that don't speak a hint of English which is what the Dentist chick was.

Just keep practicing, get them on facetime/skype and have them teach you while you teach them. Women LOVE teaching you their language, my Portuguese was helped by the woman I was seeing.
