Cool story, but I wish he kept it to himself.
The dope thing him declaring himself the King of the South was how audacious it was. nikka was going around asking for permission before hand.

I think a part of him knew the minute he claimed King, fans who revere those artists he named were gonna have the reaction of “is this nikka serious?” and if they (the artists) themselves doubled down publicly it could potentially make him look silly and kill his momentum (see Jacquees and “King of R&B”).

Having their blessings + notable collaborations with all those guys actually gave his claim more credibility.

I hear you, but part of his legacy was 'He called himself the King of the South and nobody did nothing'. Now we know he was going around and making sure everyone was cool with it beforehand.

He always said he wasn't talking about the legends

I feel like this was common knowledge though. He had Scarface on his “Down with the King” mixtape in 2004 talking about it during a conversation. He had Pimp C on his King album in ‘07 speaking on it.

Tip did a number of embarrassing things as he got older but one thing you gotta give him, he never turned down no fades or beefs. He stood on his two with anything, more g than a bunch of other rap nikkas from his era...

I do recall 50 trying him publicly a few times (highkey called him a snitch on the gun charges, basically called him dumb for not having his wife take his drug charge) and he had NOWHERE near the same smoke he had for Flip who ALLEGEDLY said something about him onstage:
