they started as a japanese company, they've pretty much become a global entertainment company since playstation was founded. Their music and movie division aren't based in japan either
I think the thing with japan is their technology strives for getting smaller/compact and western tech is about increasing in size. We want larger stationary stuff and larger screen sizes and more power. I think sony is probably just ok with funding the bigger AAA japanese games with global appeal at this point and making up for lost sales with their new mobile gaming division there. even those 3rd party japanese publishers are trying harder to appeal to the west. Companies like capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Team Ninja, even Bandai Namco who mostly make anime-centric and licensed games sell better here now.
