They ended doakes too early. They should've waited before that part of the story, should've waited until at least season 5. People catching on about dexter in barely the second season wasnt the best idea imo
They rushed that shyt but you can tell they thought a show about a serial killer being a hero wouldn't last too long so they rushed it... little did they know the show would last too long

To be fair Doakes only started to notice that Dexter was off only because Dexter fukked up and got too friendly at the beginning... sealed his fate with Doakes
fukk a fukking spoiler tag, if you haven't seen the first two seasons of dexter by now go fukk your mother
onto my point....
I don't think Dexter did anything in particular to really set Doakes off, he just found dexter to be awkward or creepy, he could see threw his mask that he put on everyday at work, the smiling bringing donuts for everyone type of guy is not who dex really is.
Nah Dexter was getting too close to cases early on which made Doakes go "why all these motherfukkers dissappearing all of a sudden?" The masks and the donuts just added to Doakes suspicion of Dex
Yeah, I guess it was probably the combined effect of all that, but doakes was always suspicious of dex even before the bay harbor stuff. I need to go back and rewatch the first two seasons
First 2 seasons were GOAT
