Yes and no. The thing about Smash is that it brings the worst out of everybody. Even people who wouldn't count themselves among the "Smash community" (usually in reference to the competitive scene) can't seem to just enjoy the game without being a$$holes to either Nintendo or other people who play. It also doesn't help that the fan base across the board is probably the most demanding and ungrateful in all gaming.
That said, there are a lot of people who just want to play the damn game and stay out of the drama. It sucks that they have to constantly be lumped in with the idiots.
Ironically a robust online system would solve this. The reason there are so many vocal weirdos is because they had to go out of their way to find places with like minded people offline and online. If I could just hop on and get some games in I probably wouldn't even engage with the Smash community. But damn you gotta go find people in real life to get some good games going. And when you find them...
