KnicksFam Deep Thought:
:ohhh: A thought just came to me.

J.R Smith's skillset, athleticism and ceiling... Take away his knucklehead mentality and replace it w/ Derrick Rose like discipline and calm demeanor...

How good would he be? How good would the Knicks be? :lupe:

JR Is Definitely Talented As Hell, Its Hard To Say What He Would Be With A Different Mentality But I Cant Front I Sometimes Watch Him And Think He Can Be So Much More, Sad Thing Is He'll Probably Never Get There

But here is the silver lining... If Shump continues to play close to the level he played on Wednesday, for the rest of the season, JR won't have the luxury to be a knucklehead. He'll be forced to change if he wants to get the minutes he thinks he deserves. And if THJR shoots like he did on Wednesday on an consistent basis.... Well then JR will be in for some heart ache and pain if he doesn't get in line, because that would make Shump a better defender than him and a legitimate scoring threat, with the option of bringing in a knockdown shooter at the 2 with THJR.

The only thing JR will be able to do to separate himself will be to penetrate the basket.... If he doesn't do that, then his value will start to diminish as far is this team is concerned. If he does do that, then the Knicks are in great shape this year. (Imagine having a potential line-up where 1-4 are 3pt threats :gladbron: )

Let's be real, part of the reason JR got so much burn last year was because he was the only option when Melo was out or struggling. That won't be the case this year, so JR will have to work that much harder to earn it. Last year, he had to compete with the likes of an old Jason Kidd, a one dimensional Novak, a young and unproven Copeland, a Shump fresh off an injury, an older and un-NBA-proven Prigs, and a broken down STAT.

This year he has to compete with Bargnani, MWP, a new and improved Shump, an older but proven Prigs, and young shooter in THJR.... and still a broken down STAT :skip:. And this year, he's the one coming off the injury. Not to mention, Udrih looked alright out there too. JR is gonna have a tough time doing what he did last year, even if it's only because he won't get the same minutes.

Honestly, if I were GM... I'd call J.R into a closed door meeting...

I'd tell JR... he'd get a $5,000 bonus every game he shoots over a 48% from the f

Now :whoa: but...

*I know yall are going to kill me for opening up this pandora box but...*

If Shump plays to his potential and THJR becomes a real offensive threat... What's out there in exchange for J.R ina potential trade?

Again:whoa: Just curious...

In the process of my typing my previous post... I thought the same thing for a moment. But I stopped myself. Realistically, I don't see it happening. For one, considering how Woody works, THJR probably won't get any real minutes until past half-way through the season, when and if he can prove himself worthy. See Chris Copeland. He'd have to play twice as hard and just as well as JR to really cut into his minutes.

If we're talking about in a perfect world... The only thing I'd be willing take for JR is a legitimate backup center. We don't need anymore point guards or two guards. We're set at Power forward if STAT can give 10-15 minutes a game. We could use maybe another small forward but not really considering Melo will probably be playing 30-35+ minutes per game. We need a rebounding/defending 6-7ppg backup center, and maybe a backup small forward/two guard to even it out.

But then getting back to reality, any team looking for a player like JR probably isn't giving up a reliable backup big man. :manny:

Knicks thrilled Raptors gave up on Bargnani

“I like everything about him,’’ Woodson said. “That was the reason we brought him over. I think he’s just a talented kid who knows how to play. I’ve got to keep his spirits up and pat him when he needs to be patted and ride his [butt] when it needs to be rode.’’

“The beauty of Bargnani is he’s going to find out he’s going to have a lot of wide-open threes the way we play,’’ Woodson said. “He can make threes, put the ball on the floor and he can post up. He’s a triple threat in terms of scoring the ball.’’

As tough as Indiana and Chicago's defense is plus Miami's big three and all their shooters, we still need JR because he's a viable offensive threat. But I'm not opposed to trading him, because he disappears in the playoffs.

His contract is low compared to his actual talent. Any trade would result in getting a lesser player back. Unless you package him with Bargs or someone else (which they should explore).

LOL at still acknowledging STAT as a contributor to this team going forward. He gets surgery more times a year than I get dental checkups.

I only have a 1 game sample size but Alrich looks capable of this. This is the 1st time in years I don't think we actually need anything. Need a player that is. What we need is health. Woody should monitor everyone's minutes this year. He needs to steal a page from the Popovich regular season playbook.
