With a char like Balrog you want to abuse his reach and ground normals. Make him respect you with st HP. It crush counters now so this is one of your best tools
St mk is deceptively wide so in the mid range you can catch nikas stray normals.
When charge chars hold down back the whole match it gives the opp the mind to disrespect you. The charge is expected so you have to change the meta. Charge chars are also traditionally bad at dealing wit cross ups so if you get knocked down once

its all about preference, both are equally viable. . I've got a fightstick and i can't go back to pad now. There's people here that do really good with the pad though. shyt, the current world champ Nuckledu won with a pad lol.
I would say go for it, they're a lot of fun to use. But it will take a week or two to get used to it if you didn't play much in the arcades.
