there's three traits that define a great defender 1. motor/hustle 2. length/athleticism 3. intelligence/high basketball IQ.
Lebron, Iggy and Tyson Chandler possess all traits, which make them elite defenders. someone like Arron Afflalo has the motor and intelligence but lacks the length/athleticism. while someone like JaVale McGee has the motor and length/athleticism but his understanding of defensive schemes isn't up to par yet.
Amare? he doesn't possess the motor or intelligence, is undersized when he plays the 5 and his athleticism is declining at a rapid pace. even saying he can be serviceable on D is a stretch.
