easily before herc as was pete dj jones.They go back to the late 1960's.
Herc never did that for people to rap in the Bronx because Rapping in the Bronx was the last element more towards to later 70's. Before,that dudes in the Bronx like Coke La Rock would just do radom/freelanced shout outs over the music.The Disco Dj's did a less percussive form of it though before the Bronx. You, sir... need to get the fukk out of this HIP HOP community website then. Hip hop is a LIFESTYLE. And if you fail to understand that. Then you truly do not understand black culture as a whole.
this thread is the equivalent of saying that because cheese, dough and tomato sauce existed for hundreds of years, that the people who later took those ingredients and invented pizza didnt do anything new and that people who enjoy deep dish (the equivalent of trap) shouldn't call what they eat 'pizza' even tho deep dish is a direct descendant.
Hip hop was a very specific cultural and artistic revolution that happened to influence most things that came after it. Not everything, but certainly every 'sub-genre' of music we talk about in the booth. You don't have to call it hiphop but its heavily laced in hiphop whether you like it or not. The music most people in the booth listen to today is heavily laced in hiphop the way rock n roll and soul was laced in the blues. It is what it is

Also, people need to understand that even when other elements that make up hip hop CULTURE are from different cultures, different regions, predate hip hop culture.... that element BY ITSELF is not hip hop. To make up something into a full fledge CULTURE, it has to combine all the elements together and make it as your lifestyle. So, graffiti, breakin', emceeing, and DJ-ing, along with slang, street fashion, and the rebellious nature overall aren't what hop hop is when separate. You got a lot of rappers that aren't hip hop at all, but if you put all of those together and how it now EVOLVED 40 years later...it is its own culture.
