Deadline reports the Arrow star has joined Heels, Starz's drama about independent professional wrestling. Amell will play Jack Spade, "the charismatic villain, or heel, of the Duffy Wrestling Association (DWA). In the real world, he’s its hard-working owner, a husband and father trying to make ends meet while fighting to realize his impossible dreams. He has the mind of an artist in the body of a warrior, and a Steve Jobs-ian need for perfection -- and for control. He says he’ll do whatever it takes to build the DWA into an empire. Will he go so far as to risk his marriage, or his relationship with his brother?"

Following Amell's casting, the project is moving forward with an eight-episode first season. According to the series description,

Heels is about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to -- or hard to leave behind.

During an appearance at last weekend's Fan Expo Boston 2019, Amell revealed he had closed on a new role, though he did not reveal exactly what that new role would be. "I've recently closed on a new project that I'm really excited about, that I am not allowed to talk about. It's on TV. I thought that the news was going to break last night, and I was kind of excited to talk about it today," he teased at the time. Considering he has long been interested in wrestling, going so far as to face Stardust on WWE Raw in 2015, it's no wonder he was so excited about this new opportunity.

Alexander Ludwig Set As the Co-Lead In Starz’s Stephen Amell Wrestling Drama Series ‘Heels’ – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, The Hunger Games) is set as the co-lead opposite Stephen Amell in Heels, Starz’s eight-episode hourlong drama set in the outrageous world of independent professional wrestling.

Written by Michael Waldron, with Mike O’Malley as showrunner, Heels is about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals, Jack (Amell) and Ace (Ludwig) Spade, war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy (Ludwig) and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel (Amell). But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

In the ring, Ludwig’s Ace Spade is the beloved hero and star of the DWA. Things are more difficult in the real world, where he struggles to reconcile his town idol status with his insecurities and demons. He’s brash, cocky and self-destructive — yet so damn charming and good-looking that you can almost forgive him. If he can keep it together, he’ll have a ticket out of Duffy and to the big time. But that’s a big if.

Heels is produced by Lionsgate TV in association with Paramount TV. Along with Waldron and O’Malley, LBI Entertainment’s Julie Yorn, Chris Donnelly and Patrick Walmsley serve as executive producers.

Like Arrow star Amell, Ludwig is segueing to Heels from a long-running hit series heading into its final season. He stars as Björn Ironside, the son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Lagertha, on History’s Vikings.

Also known for his portrayal of Cato in The Hunger Games, Ludwig will be seen starring opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys For Life. He is repped by Untitled Entertainment and UTA.

He offered the role of the other brother to Cody

Maybe it hits too close to home :ld:

I got the impression it was a behind the scenes consultant type deal, rather than a job on the cast.:patrice:

Unless Amell has crazy juice - which I doubt - he can't just offer someone the second biggest role in the show. The studio would just look at him like:wtf:..... :mjlol:
