Quiet as kept, I think the sports broadcasting bubble is about to burst. The return on investment can't last this long. Especially with subscribers cutting cord and content providers slow to embrace digital media. Outside of WatchESPN (and it's not that great of a product), who else is even making an attempt?
certainly. there are far too many outlets for information that espn tried to get entrenched in too late..same with fox etc. random twitch users and youtubers have millions of subscribers..the biggest target market for these networks dont see the need or desire to listen to these guys just because their credibility is largely tied or started in newspapers..something the young guns have never even once cared about. cowherd is just a schmuck. at least skip has done some decent journalistic work in the past (even if its distant)
edit to add: espn probably has and have had many plans for expansion (such as what they did bringing in blogger and son of sam message board poster bill simmons) via just purchasing out organic movements and fan bases..but now these popular voices can't really be bought under an umbrella that they can manage and eat off of..or at least they havent figured out a way to make it cost-effective for both sides when these youtubers etc are making dough as it is by views without half the work.
