i never knew the same man wrote all those classics
He's an interesting director.
I've not seen any of those early foreign language joints, nor have I seen his last two movies (I'd like to see
Elle though), but that run from
Robocop ->
Black Book is pretty noteworthy.
Robocop and
Total Recall are classic 80's movies. I think that
Robocop in particular is one of the most relevant movies you could watch
today given our current policing climate.
Total Recall still has people arguing if it was real or not, and is probably one of the better "virtual reality" movies.
Basic Instinct might seem a little cheesy nowadays, but it's good campy fun and was somewhat groundbreaking at the time of release (It also made Sharon Stone a star for a short time).
Showgirls is a legendary flop BUT even that has a bit of a cult following amongst those that love "so bad they're good" films. I already talked about my love of
Starship Troopers. There are very few movies that I would sit down and watch at any given time over SST. Not saying it's without fault, but it's
extremely engaging.
Hollow Man is harder to defend, if you like those laboratory sci-fi/horror movies (I'm thinking
The Fly,
Splice,
The Lazarus Effect, etc) like I do than it's really fun.
Black Book probably doesn't mean shyt to most Americans, but it's like, the most successful Dutch movie ever
, and was considered a return to form for him.
I wouldn't mind seeing him get a crack at a bigger budgeted film again.
