The story for Finn writes itself. 'A former stormtrooper breaks his programming to eventually become a Jedi and fight against those he swore to protect'
Have Finn conflicted about killing stormtroopers too. "I can't kill them they were raised like me, child soldiers." But it gets to the point where he can't reach them anymore, they're too far gone, so he has to fight a part of who he used to be.
The bait and switch in the marketing was basically an affirmative action metaphor. Finn was never meant to be 'the guy.' Seeing Finn with the lightsaber was cool, but that's all we were meant to see. They already had their designated protagonist.
