somewhere along the line fans got the impression that star wars had the potential to be a shared universe franchise in the vein of something like marvel. this was never going to be the case and it looks like disney may have to find out the hard way.

:manny:

the marvel universe is easier to expand because each movie introduces a new type of superhero. we have a movie about an old timey masked crusader, a mythological warrior, a sorcerer, a kid with spider powers... and so on and so on. each character occupying different worlds with their own set of rules. there's just way more variety.

here are all the character types in star wars:

- jedi / sith
- military leader / soldier
- smuggler / bounty hunter / gangster
- alien / droid

that's been pretty much it. these are the people that occupy this world. we have not really seen a new character type introduced since 1977.

and again it's not just characters, it's the scope of the world. marvel movies take us to different worlds. outer space, asgard, wakanda, the sanctum sanctorum, 1940's america, modern day queens... in fact part of the reason the avengers movies are so great is how well they deliver on the feeling of seeing those worlds collide in true crossover fashion.

star wars may take us to different planets but they don't really take us to different worlds. the only thing separating them are the landscapes, the architecture and the creatures. the 'world' in star wars is the galaxy itself... but it doesn't go beyond that. every movie is spaceships and planet hopping.

star wars doesn't have enough character types or enough variety to follow the marvel formula.

they were on the right track with solo the problem was that it was based off on han solo which no one really cared about. they could have made a whole new series of a fast furious style team of people just doing their thing along the galaxy. people would see it as soon as they see the star wars logo. just do different genres in the star wars universe.

hasn't that been every movie? :manny:

What made Star Wars so dope to me as a kid was the fact that every film, even the shytty prequels, felt like big events. One movie would drop, then you'd have to wait 3 years for the next one and all this anticipation would build. Now it's like they're dropping a new Star Wars project every few months and it's hard to get hyped for it. I'd much rather they go back to the one movie every 3 year strategy but obviously there's too much money and merchandising at stake for them to do something like that.

The truth is that they waited too long to do a sequel trilogy. Fans already had an expanded universe with new heros, villains, aliens, creatures, other worlds and aspects of the Force. They waited too long and now we have this disjointed continuity and writers who don't understand the mythos. They try to make up for this with nostalgic aesthetics but with weak stories and characters that means nothing. People were anticipating Mara Jade, the Solo Twins, Ben Skywalker. Star Wars had an expanded universe bur it got dropped for whatever they putting out now

Besides the sequel trilogy being ass. They fukked up by ERASING the Extended Universe. It had some truly dope stories that were RIPE for cinema and they basically said “fukk it. We’re gonna basically remake the OG trilogy with an overhyped Mary Sue, an emasculated buffoon of a black guy, and for good measure we’ll say fukk the skywalkers and end the lineage with old disgraced Luke dying alone on a rock!”

If they added those shyt ...it wouldnt be a star wars movie to you and yall would find a way to complain about it...

They are just sticking to what made the original popular, why take risks with a brand like star wars when you can just rehash the old movies and still eat:yeshrug:

Rogue One is pretty "risky" by the general SW tropes. Not really a rehash either, and it's still by far the best film of the Disney era.

The thing about the EU was that it wasn't set in stone canon, only George's creations were. Disney having their own EU opens up more possiblities for storytelling. And if you don't like what they are doing you can always go back to the old EU?
The main problem with Disney's Star Wars run so far is that they only see Star Wars in the context of the original films and that's it. They listened to all the "George ruined/killed my childhood" with the prequels and blocked him from working on the sequel trilogy thinking they can do it better.

They need to except the lore George has established instead of picking and choosing because of some childhood fantasy they had of becoming a Jedi :mjlol:

I bet a good amount of these Star Wars fans (the ones the Disney caters to) you seen pop up when Ep 7 dropped never really watched Clone Wars, and got down with the EU.

This, the EU would have been easy to adapt.

Needed to do a Vader solo flick instead of hans solo flick and call it a day. And more jedi saber fights. Give the people what they wanna see.

This, we could've easily had a james earl jones movie back in 2004. Now his voice sounds too elderly but i would still watch it over all these proposed spin offs.
