somewhere along the line fans got the impression that star wars had the potential to be a shared universe franchise in the vein of something like marvel. this was never going to be the case and it looks like disney may have to find out the hard way.
the marvel universe is easier to expand because each movie introduces a new type of superhero. we have a movie about an old timey masked crusader, a mythological warrior, a sorcerer, a kid with spider powers... and so on and so on. each character occupying different worlds with their own set of rules. there's just way more variety.
here are all the character types in star wars:
- jedi / sith
- military leader / soldier
- smuggler / bounty hunter / gangster
- alien / droid
that's been pretty much it. these are the people that occupy this world. we have not really seen a new character type introduced since 1977.
and again it's not just characters, it's the scope of the world. marvel movies take us to different worlds. outer space, asgard, wakanda, the sanctum sanctorum, 1940's america, modern day queens... in fact part of the reason the avengers movies are so great is how well they deliver on the feeling of seeing those worlds collide in true crossover fashion.
star wars may take us to different planets but they don't really take us to different worlds. the only thing separating them are the landscapes, the architecture and the creatures. the 'world' in star wars is the galaxy itself... but it doesn't go beyond that. every movie is spaceships and planet hopping.
star wars doesn't have enough character types or enough variety to follow the marvel formula.
