star wasn't breaking down shyt. he was trolling most of the time. yesterday he was going on and on about how alessia cara deserved to win best new artist, but last week, he said that sza was going to win best new artist because of her impact on the culture and on females lmao.
also star's argument yesterday for why alessia cara deserved to win was bullshyt. if you look at the criteria for best new artist, its "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." AC released her first album in 2015, she had a top 5 single in 2015 and a top 10 hit in 2016. on top of that, shes been winning "best new artist" awards from multiple organizations since 2015. if star was really breaking shyt down, he wouldn't be arguing for AC at all, because its clear she doesn't fit with the Grammy criteria for best new artist. IMO AK's point was much stronger, that shes receiving a heavy label push and its possible that stuff in the background is what led her to win the Grammy.
also you don't have to watch the Grammys to talk about it. What do you gain from watching the Grammys over looking at a list of the winners at the end of the night? all you miss are the performances (majority of which have nothing to do with hip hop or the awards) and the acceptance speeches (which are useless most of the time). Watching the grammys doesn't put you at any sort of advantage to have an intelligent conversation about the winners and why they won and why others lost.
My understanding of the category was any artist who’s never been nominated for anything before is considered a new artist. Ie, new artist to the Grammy’s
