The creator of the web-slinging superhero has responded to the latest leaked Sony emails, saying he agrees with the decision to keep the character’s ethnicity and sexuality unchanged.

After a new set of leaked Sony emails revealed a restrictive set of rules for Spider-Man’s on-screen persona, the character’s creator, Stan Lee, has spoken out in support of the controversial stipulations.

The rule that says Peter Parker, Spidey’s alter ego, should always be white doesn’t bother Lee, according to an interview he gave to entertainment site Newsarama.

“I wouldn’t mind, if Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way,” he said. “But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.”

Lee is also in agreement with the requirement that Parker’s sexuality should remain as originally written, but is open to the idea of other homosexual comic book characters.

“I think the world has a place for gay superheroes, certainly,” he said. “But again, I don’t see any reason to change the sexual proclivities of a character once they’ve already been established. I have no problem with creating new, homosexual superheroes.”

Lee was also keen to point out that his remarks had nothing to do with bigotry, but rather with staying true to his work.

“It has nothing to do with being anti-gay, or anti-black, or anti-Latino, or anything like that,” he said. “Latino characters should stay Latino. The Black Panther should certainly not be Swiss. I just see no reason to change that which has already been established when it’s so easy to add new characters. I say create new characters the way you want to. Hell, I’ll do it myself.”

His comments follow news that Miles Morales, a mixed-race iteration of Spider-Man, will be replacing Peter Parker in the comics.

The latest Spider-Man reboot is still in the process of casting its lead, with The Impossible star Tom Holland rumoured to be the frontrunner.

Of course he doesn't. You won't find surprise, here. A characters backstory can change countless times but their race can't? Plus he is a PoC in new comics.

I'm loving the the rise of black races in comic media but either way why aren't there more original black superheroes? For example, Static, Storm, Bumblebee, Black Panther, misty Knight etc

I think instead of race lifting popular characters, they should create new ones, (although i'm guessing it's financially a risk for them.)

I kinda agree with both. Spider-Man is Spider-Man. Then again I'm against changing characters basically across the board.

The problem is actual black super heroes don't get promoted so they occasionally turn a more popular super hero black. It's stupid. Just give Black Panther, Cage, whoever, the same promo as your A-listers and see what happens.

I don't have a problem with them making Spider-Man a minority OR a gay character, but PETER PARKER is a white heterosexual and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. So tired of all this shaming that goes on these days. Miles is the new Spidey, Parker is still going to be around in some costume or another. Everyone wins.

People need to come up with some new characters and get them TO Spider-Man/Peter Parker's level instead of trying to take the easy way out and change the skin color or sexual preference of 50+ year old character that already has a huge built-in fanbase. That's a disservice to the fans AND to minorities, IMO.

:francis: Been saying this for years. Both Marvel & DC should just use more of their actual Black Heroes/Villains/Supporting characters from the comics instead of changing the race of an already established character.

i.e. Instead of making Perry White black in "Man of Steel" They could have just used the black reporter Ron Troupe in the movie. Instead of making Electro Black in ASM2 they could've used the Prowler, Tombstone, Rocket Racer, or etc.
