That’s call a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central venous Catheter) line and is standard for people who need prolonged antibiotics whether it be for joint/bone infections, blood infections, heart valve infection, etc. I’ve placed them in people before (although we usually have them done by a specially trained PICC nurse) and had 100s if not 1000s of patients with them as would other doctors. People can go home with them and can even self-administer their own IV antibiotics at home after being trained without much change in their daily activities otherwise.
