His role was 3rd option on offense (same as it would be in Houston) & be a spacer who could knock down shots (same as it would be in Houston). The Rockets aren't going to stand around taking the ball out of Harden & CP3s hands, throwing the ball to Melo so he can hold the ball jabstepping 47 times before firing up a midrange shot or if he actually gets by his defender that he'll more than likely miss & have to go in there attepting a putback that will have a unusually high chance of also missing.

Melo played 84 games (including playoffs) last season, 43 times he had the same number or more of shots than points. About 56% of his shots were open or wide open by NBA standards (even though somehow through pure magic he'll get easier shots than this because people don't like Russy) & he shot worse on those than when somebody was right on him. Nevermind his defense was bad against slower 4s, Houston might have him on 3s.
