Spirit Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following significant financial struggles due to mounting losses and debt maturities, the airline announced Monday.

The filing comes after two failed mergers in less than two years – one recently with Frontier and another earlier in 2024 with JetBlue – which left the ultra-low-cost carrier in a bind after repetitive quarterly losses.

In October, Spirit announced plans to sell multiple aircraft and lay off workers as it tried to raise cash and revive operations.

Spirit Airlines President and CEO Ted Christie said the airline has entered into an agreement with its bondholders that is expected to reduce the company's total debt and provide increased financial flexibility.

Don't see why this should be celebrated. They offered affordable safe flights across the nation. Yeah it attracted ratchet people but that's not the airlines fault.
Cheap stuff is going to attract ratchets. You pay for comfort, and to fly with people who have something to lose. They can still act up, but it doesn’t happen as often. It sucks, but that’s the way it is. If Spirit offered me free flights for a year, I still wouldn’t go.

nah same here. flying with almost guaranteed fukkery (in comparison to other lines, to be clear) is never worth it for a lot of people. and that's exactly why spirit was shaky even during its best days.

“Guaranteed fukkery”

Just admit you barely fly :russ:
yeah nah i fly all the time :mjpls:

paying extra to streamline and shortcut is how these companies thrive to begin with. and that's actually the biggest problem with spirit - people aren't going to fly again if the experience is poor straight up. people don't come back.

Edit: why not

2.2 billion loss in 5 years

Spirit is the first major U.S. airline to file for Chapter 11 since 2011. Hasn't posted a full-year profit since 2019.

its been grim, etc

As someone who flies regularly this is BS. Spirits advertised fares might be cheaper but once you account for all of added fees they charged they were as much if not more than you would pay with a more reputable airline. :camby:

These cheap airlines serve their purpose, its not good for the consumers that there is less competition in the market place as the top giants of the industry can further capture the entire market space and people will have little choice of airlines
