As far as a comeback. He's a strange actor. People also say that he needs to do more "normal" roles but he never really stands out in those movies. He's a star that never really felt like he had that star quality. Tom Cruise/Denzel/Tom Hanks can tone it down and put in those "standard" roles but Depp needs to be slightly eccentric less he doesn't have presence.
Appearently, he's going to be heavily involved in that Fantastic Beast franchise, so he's probably good in regards to the box-office (And this doesn't even mention Pirates, as others have already brought up). Does he even CARE outside of the BO? Probably not.
