I go pass just chucking up an air freshener or spraying any of that funk ass fruit spray about. I clean the car and it's upholstry then add whatever for a final touch.
1) Clean the dash and all other surfaces with armor all 'cause what's the sense in having a clean smelling car if you got dust in that bytch?
2) Take the mats out and clean/wash 'em with soap and let 'em dry for a day, 'cause alot of the funk gets trapped in dingy foot mats.
3) I spray the carpet beneath the mats as well as the seats with Carpet Fresh and wet vac it out. A regular vac works well too.
4) Air Freshener of my choice. Now while I like those Fabreeze clip in joints, down here in the Caribbean them shyts can cost an arm and a leg and depending on the type of folk you got coming into your ride, they tend to get the clips broken off when people knock into them or at times stolen (This fakkit I gave a ride to one time actively stole the 2 on his side on two separate occasions...
so I been using
I find it's best to actually open the can and remove those the little sponges and stick them DIRECTLY into the air vents of your AC and blast it on the coldest setting for a solid 10-15 minutes to maximize the smell as opposed to just having it languishing in the cup holder and filling the place...but yeah. After I do all that, My car's pretty good and I'm more receptive to picking up folks/randoms/broads as opposed to when it's all dirty/musty from me and transporting construction related shyt/tools.
