Shot out to @THE 101 for the inspiration. Ive been meaning to make a similar thread for a while.

As of today who has the better discography?

I told a co worker a while back between the two..Kendrick.

He asked me what my metrics were for top 5s or top 10s. I told him I dont care about impact or sales, just the music, the albums.

He asked me how is Jay in your top 5 then and Kendrick aint if you think his discography is better? I couldn't answer that and it had me rethinking my top 5.

Anyway who ya got?

hov might actually have the best rap catalog :patrice:

Jay been in my top 5 since 1997 when i was 14 lol.

But the older i get and compare his catlaog (the highs and the lows) to Nas, Common, Scarface, Ghostface, Pac, Cube (even with the drop off).....his looks really weak to me

But I think part of that is my preference for subject matter has changed a bit.

Jay edges it for now but if Kendrick's next album is a heat rock I can see it going the other way

Hov might have as many bad albums as good albums, and the good ones ain't even THAT good :lupe:

Let's not do that. Hov's best albums are masterpieces.

Being very strict, the following albums are masterpieces from Hov

Reasonable Doubt
Blueprint
The Black Album
American Gangster

Vol 1 and 2, Blueprint 2 are very good.

4:44 is aight.

Vol 3, Kingdom Come, Blueprint 3: mid to awful

From Kendrick, his masterpieces are:

Good Kid Mass City
To Pimp a Butterfly

DAMN and Section 80 are very good.

Mr Morales is aight.

Giving Jay the nod here. It's hard to be consistently good over time and you're bound to have a few dips in artistic quality.

Cube yes

The other two no. None of them have anything as bad as MCHG, BP3 and Kingdom Come

Don't get me started on the collab albums lol

Honestly, the Nas and Kendrick comparisons make more sense because they're both very conceptual artists.

Jay's best albums weren't really all that conceptual. AG and 4:44 come the closest to being concept albums.

Blueprint, Black Album, and the Volume albums, however, was really just Jay spitting over good beats. He cemented himself as a rapper with those albums but they're not really creative.

I'd say Jay's best 5 albums(RD, BP, BA, AG, 4:44) are stronger hip hop albums on average than Kendrick's 5 albums but Kendrick's albums generally have more depth and creativity to them as far as concepts and songwriting goes.

Basically, I think Jay's the better rapper but Kendrick's the better artist if that makes sense.
