Why don't hood flicks get the credit they deserve as cinematic masterpieces? Why everyone saying CoG "in a landslide"? It seems like "hood flicks" still carry a certain negative connotation in terms of being able to tell a story without seeming too niche to the target demographic. I love CoG but I wouldn't say CoG in a landslide over menace.

City of God and it's not even close.

ETA: COG had great camerawork, cinematography, the editing, the acting. I also want to point out like a previous poster already said, the actors were all amateurs. IMO it gave the characters a bit more depth and nuance. COG made me go research Brazil and learn more about its modern politics. I guess you could argue the same couldn't be said about menace since I do live here and I know much of the dynamics, but the story in and of itself was not that interesting. The cinematography was nothing to write home about. I even remember the melody of them chasing the chicken in the beginning go COG. Just an all around better movie, and it's not close.

Menace wins for me. I tried to watch City of God, but I got bored with it and didn’t finish the movie.

I think we’re all in agreeance that Menace to Society is a fantastic movie, but City of God is head-and-shoulders above most movies in general.
I’ve actually always wanted a movie about the Cabrini-Greene homes or Robert Taylor Homes, similar to City of God. Because there is a lot of similarity.

City of God is a more compelling drama, it is a stronger film visually, and more dynamic in it's storytelling. What's notable is that despite the fact that it came out nine years later, it has a smaller budget than Menace II Society.

Also, for those who don't know, the only professional actor in City of God was the guy who played Carrot. Everyone else was actually from the slum.

Seu Jorge (Knockout Ned) wasn't he was already an established artist down there.

I love both films. Menace is more relateable because I'm African-American. City of God is a better film. :manny:
