Co-sign.

I’ll give 2 brief examples that I’ve seen as a Freelance Graphic Designer and while working for my Pops when he had businesses.

Example 1
Customer: :ohhh: “How much for a poster just like this one?”

Me: “My standard price is x per hour and that includes 2 revisions.”

Customer: :scust: “Maaaan I can do that myself. I ain’t paying that much for that.”

*As if I’m charging him more than everyone else, but my quality of work is what caused him to inquire.

:francis:

Example 2

Customer: :patrice:“Y’all cant hook me up? I’ll tell people to come spend money with you.”

Me: “We appreciate the word of mouth, but this is the lowest we can set our price.”

Customer: :scust:“Y’all boogie over here. Don’t wanna help your people out.”

:dahell:

*How the fukk can we help everyone, not make profits and expect to stay open?
The good thing is Tho, in metro ATL the black people who own businesses are like their own group and rock with each other. Wealthy black men also support black owned the most here. If you own a business here, it’s a whole new world of connections. You become a magnet for people to come to you world wide.

This is what I mean when I say I want a higher caliber of clientele. Raising my price will make it where I will only deal with wealthy folks who rock with me.

I remember working with my pops. He said the big spenders are allowed to come in, take up his time, ask questions, complain because they usually leave with something.

It’s the people who take up the most time but don’t spend or just leave my dad would give baseline service to because he would always say “they’re not my customer”

The customer is not always right...

Ain't that why we want out of the 9-5 grind, to do business on our terms? Can't wait until I am running my own company so I carefreely say "no".

Saw thread title and didn't even bother entering the thread.

EDIT: I get his sentiment, but there's nuance to every interaction.

See, but I feel this is the wrong attitude. And I totally get where your dad was coming from because I've felt that way in the past at times.

But instead of giving "baseline service" to those folks, I would rather give great service to everybody and just price out subpar people and make it where they can't afford me. I think that's a better way of doing it, instead of giving them baseline service.

If you're only having issues with black clients as a businessman or black businesses as a customer, the problem is you, not them.

:russ:

Tell me what kind of business you run. Just got off the phone with family last night and good lord…

My family FEEDS their employees daily (in addition to pay and benefits) and one goofy tried to complain about the food options in a meeting.

Family asked “how were the free meals at your last job?” Dude said, we didn’t get free meals…

:snoop:

Well then how about shutting the fukk up?

Our people really do show out when dealing with us in business.

McDowell's
like i said in my thread, i was pretty laid back about not getting responses on time. but when i do get responses and they're apathetic, i get pissed off. you lose nothing by getting back to me on time and at least faking being interested in what we're talking about.

i promise you i'm acutely aware of the constraints of a small business or venture. having said that, i'm not out of line to expect black owners to be on the ball. we have to work twice as hard as others anyway, this is no different.

i'm not looking for discounts because im black, too. if anything, i pay extra because YOU are. i always tip my barber 40% and i always tip black servers more. every chance i get, i give more to my people. but i want the same from my people to me.

Those people tend to be crabs and intentionally sabotage business and keep tabs on you. It’s petty weirdos out here

Baseline service is still good service, you just gotta wait your turn
