I never saw the movie (too young when it came out) but have been a fan of Spike from Crooklyn, Inside Man, Do the Right Thing. My brother had this movie and I never had the desire to watch it. So I decide to give it a chance.

It's pretty good. You can tell a 50+(Spike) person is writing it cause the characters are late 20s/30s but don't refer to anything that would make you see them as that.

Supposedly the main writers are Black women. Spike is directing all the episodes though.

Really? I don’t know if these guys are just updates of the original guys cause noticed how dated their communications felt. The lack of texting or FaceTiming plus the music made it feel older. Very much face to face and actually on the phone.

Yeah the dudes are updates but take on a similar style the OGs had.

3 eps in.....Pretty good so far

Don't like how they've updated Greer Childs's character
dude is one chromosome away from being a faq.
The fake accent Fat Joe uses is hilarious

Edit: Did anyone notice in episode 1 they used the original
''She's Gotta Have Song'' song?

Finished it last night, overall it was decent although predictable in many ways. Being subtle has never been Spikes style but the constant rants/moral grandstanding built into the dialogue was overdone. Compare the choppiness and consistent heavyhandedness of some of the anti-gentrification dialogue/storylines with the initial shocking "my nikka" video which was subsequently drawn out with subtlety and solid character development.

The way Brooklyn was presented left much to be desired, you didn't get the "magic" of BK or NYC in this show. Compared to "Master of None" or even "Top Five" you didn't sense that this was a place you would tolerate a laundry list of bullshyt just to stay here.

The show will be a hit with the metro living woke crowd and the buppies who are amused by them and sometimes finance their endeavors. A criticism of mine with both this show and "Insecure" is that it shortchanges the probable downside risk/economic realities of living in these expensive metros as a young black person. Shorty was living in a spot she would never be able to afford in real life and the explanation they gave for this obvious dilemma made me say "come on son". This is one of the things that made "Atlanta" impressive you felt the fukking poverty and downside risks and insecurtites attached to it in every other episode and this was done in a space where "its so cheap in Atlanta" is a constant trope in the Black community.
