Steven Spielberg Tackling DC Comics Movie 'Blackhawk'

Steven Spielberg is jumping into the world of DC Comics.

The iconic filmmaker is tackling his first DC Comics property, the World War II action-adventure hero Blackhawk.

Spielberg, along with his Amblin Entertainment, will produce Blackhawk for Warner Bros., and is developing it as a directing vehicle, the studio announced Tuesday. The move reteams him with the studio behind his latest tentpole, Ready Player One.

David Koepp, who has work with Spielberg writing blockbusters Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is writing the script.

The material seems tailor-made for the filmmaker behind the Indiana Jones movies. Blackhawk told of an international squadron of heroic pilots led by a man named Blackhawk who fought the Nazis and their ilk in World War II.

The series debuted in 1941’s Military Comics No. 1,published originally by Quality Comics before DC acquired the property in 1956. Co-created by comic book legend Will Eisner, along with Bob Powell and Chuck Cuidera, the comic was one of the biggest sellers in the 1940s.

Spielberg will produce the film together with Kristie Macosko Krieger, under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while former studio executive Sue Kroll will executive produce under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment shingle.

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

Spielberg is still on track to make Indiana Jones 5 his next movie and is still developing a remake of West Side Story for which he is trying to cast his leads. Player One has made over $476 million worldwide since its March 29 opening.

DC is the James Dolan of movie studios. All the resources in the world, no fear in spending... and just bullshyt piled on bullshyt and average to subpar output year in and year out... but man they like to think they are big dogs.

DC making movies not connecting to their universe meanwhile Marvel bout to release infinity war... :mjlol: holy shyt...
There’s absolutely Nothing wrong with making stand alone films. Not everything has to or should be connected. A lot of the greatest comic book stories of all time are one offs.

Not saying it does...:ld: but tbh if it's a one off what purpose does it solve if it's a DC branded title set in it's overall universe...

Marvel had the right idea of creating a quilt of movies with interconnected tissue that acts as standalone movies but are still connected...

Like I said I just don't see the point in this movie...:manny:

It probably would not be connected to the universe.

Are you saying you don’t see a point in comic book films if they aren’t connected? That’s pretty silly. There is many more things you can do in one offs and stand alones when you don’t have to worry about about changing the landscape of unrelated films. From a structure stand point you can tell much stronger focused stories without having to waste screen time on world building. Movies like iron man 2 and amazing spider man 2 were weaker films for having to do it.

DC already announced they will be making non connected films. I would love it if marvel did the same. The opportunity to tell different stories is limitless.

The point of the film is apparently it’s a project that Spielberg has been thinking about making since the 80s. You don’t say no to Spielberg

I'm down.
Read the 52 Blackhawks till it got cancelled. Never got into the original, but it'll be a WW2 movie by Spielberg :yeshrug:

Now give me Jonah Hex movie that's made like a western and not a superhero movie.

Just saying to me since DC was trying to follow in Marvel's footsteps this film came out of nowhere... if its good then ok..:ld: But i'm going in with low expectations...

That's a huge get for DC.

They can easily set this in the DCEU (just reference Wonder Woman and/or Steve Trevor or a Wayne or something) to give the brand tons of credibility here, but WB is pretty dumb so there's a good possibility it'll be completely separate. Press release sounds like it's a standalone. WB should be begging Spielberg to let this be part of their DC movie universe.

Either way, what's there not to like about Spielberg doing a WW2 action adventure movie starring a squadron of ace pilots? Should be a good adventure flick regardless.
