Yup and frankly it's thanks to Sony owning the Spiderman rights that Miles' popularity skyrocketed.
When he was introduced as the new Spiderman in the Ultimate comics there was plenty of backlash. Dosent help that Marvel's writers were pretty tame with his stories.
In 2018 he was a major character in Spiderman Spiderman game and was thus introduced to a mainstream audience. The same year Into the Spiderverse came along and performed decently well at the box office, was hailed as the best Spiderman movie by the internet, gained an oscar and in the following years gained a large cult once it hit mainstream platforms.
In 2021 Marvel's
Spider-
Man:
Miles Morales was relased on PS4 and PS5
. It was just a game made to make spiderman fans happy with the new PS5 but here's the thing... On the long run it became Sony's third best selling game since 1995 (
source). A lot of PS5 new owners bought the game.
The same year Disney made an animated series for kids,
Marvel's Spidey and His Amazing Friends, that features Peter, Miles and Gwen as Spiderman/woman. It's really popular among kids.
All this to say that Sony made a lof of smart choices regarding Miles and I really doubt that Marvel would have made it possible, they still want Peter to remain the same guy down on his luck and they are afraid to try new things with him. Miles's success is legit ten years in the making and I'm curious to see what they are planning to do with his live adaptation. Maybe they will introduce him at the end of Tom Holland's run.
