Portugal Dominated Angola for Centuries. Now the Roles Are Reversed.
xxAngola-portugal1-articleInline.jpg

LISBON — How the roles have reversed: The colonizer, some Portuguese contend, has been colonized.

On the Portuguese coast of Cascais, where the nation’s royal court used to summer, a new 14-story condominium building looms confidently by the sea. So many of its apartments have been bought by Angola’s ruling class — sometimes a handful at a time — that the development has a nickname: the “Angolans’ building.”

Along the grandest shopping boulevard in the capital, Lisbon, Angola’s elite buy designer suits and handbags by the armful. And on one corner, above Louis Vuitton, sits the local office of Africa’s richest woman, Isabel dos Santos, a billionaire from Angola who has become one of Portugal’s most powerful figures by buying large chunks of the country’s banking, media and energy industries.

The money flowing into Portugal comes from the colony it dominated, often brutally, for hundreds of years, Angola. Now, the African nation is a major oil producer that has been led for the last 38 years by Ms. dos Santos’s father, President José Eduardo dos Santos.

Angola’s ruling class has profited so much during his tenure — and channeled so much of that money into Portugal — that when Angola threatened to cut off ties in recent years in response to reports that Angolan officials were being investigated for corruption in Portugal, Portugal’s foreign minister promptly apologized, setting off an intercontinental debate about the changing power dynamics between the nations.

yeah, unfortunately the comments are full of cacs getting hyped over the idea

I'm a capitalist & its also the law of nature.

If you dont compete, then you deserve to be conquered.

If you dont defend yourself, then you dont deserve freedom

I'm a Pan-Africanist but I operate within reality.

If African states were conquering foreign territories - I would be celebrating too.

Makes sense. Africa has had half a century now to catch up. Instead they squandered their time and money at tribalism and corruption. So eventually they'll get carved up by stronger players.

That mindset has done nothing in the last 70 years but bring us closer to the brink. By us, I mean humanity.

You deserve freedom, because you're human. You should compete because you want to be better. Those who don't compete, choose to stay where they are. But does not mean subservient or beholden to another.

I believe you're a capitalist, but a Pan-Africanist? It seems that those two ideologies are in complete opposition, based on what you've said.

I have no interest in African states conquering other territories. Humanity has moved and should move past that.

I’m gonna put a stop to this.

first, unite Nigeria with Cameroon, Benin and Togo.

the presidents of these countries at the time I make this decision will be paid to get lost. I bring nothing but prosperity and if u stand in my way, u will be eliminated.

I will start industries in this new United Lands, which will at first be headed by Americans or ADOS from the Americas. This will go on for a period of approximately 12 years. After which reins will be handed over to native born Africans on a case by case basis.

And if it is identified that the infrastructure diminishes during the rein of a native born, I shall take back control and reassign back to the Americans.

Corruption shall be eliminated in the question mark.

I have spoken. And it shall be so.

Seems like Africa hasn't done anything in like 120 years

Fixed.

But yeah, I always felt like the military occupation of Africa that happened at the end of 19th century & the collapse of all the original African states was karma for the slave trade.

Well then that karma ain't leaving anytime soon. Since the slave trade literally started back up after Gaddafi was assassinated.
