This was damn good, and it just might be my favorite film this year. Riz is one of my favorite actors so I was heavily anticipating this. Performances all around the block and the sound design elevate the film to a new high. Patient storytelling while still keeping respects towards the deaf community. I can't imagine going through something like this....I'd go nuts if I ever lost my hearing. If this is Marder's directorial debut then I can't wait to see what else he has in store in the future. :whew:

Anybody else watching this?

One of the best movies ive seen all year!
The way they made you feel the deaf experience was off the hook.
I also liked how they didnt spend alotta time with him being angry.
He accepted his circumstance and did what he had to.
I wish he woulda took the old mans offer tho.

Really damn good indeed. There are some aspects I still have to process but there are so many :wow: moments in this, both from an emotional as from a cinematic point of view.

And a lot fell in place when I saw Derek Cianfrance's name in the end credits as producer and story credit. This had his dramatic style all over it and Marder was one of the principal writers on Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines.

Oh, and as someone who occasionally gets tinnitus the early parts of the film had me like :lupe: too because this shyt is one of my worst fears, especially since I normally go to a ton of concerts. When I think back on how much my hearing was exposed to noise in my 20s without using earplugs I'm like :snoop: for being so careless and :whew: that I took the shyt serious when I first noticed it.

Thinking about this movie a few days later and it really had some great, understated writing.

Even though he was off the drugs, he was still an addict. He was addicted to his girl and unwilling to accept what was happening to him and was trying so hard to cling to how things were before the hearing loss. I think after he got the surgery and saw just how much she changed when they reunited, he finally realized that he had to move on and just accept the "stillness" of his new life. Also, that scene where Joe tells him he has to leave after he finds out he got the surgery was brilliantly done. So much was said in what wasn't said between the two of them. You could just tell how hurt both of them were and how much they were trying to hold that hurt in.

I think my favorite moment is:

him realizing she's self-hurting because she feels being hold hostage by his need to rely on her. They saved each other when they were both down but their relationship had grown corrupted because it was largely based in fear of abandonment.

That absolutely wrecked me. That and their departure scene
