They went into 2018 with a payroll $30 million lower than in 2017. In 2022 they traded away a good third baseman on the cheap and spent $40 million on Joey Gallo, IKF, and Josh Donaldson with another $20 million on Rizzo when 5 shortstops, Matt Olson, and Freddie Freeman were out there.
