Mario might have a more consistent catalog but Sonic was always flat out cooler and a better character. He was the original "mascot with attitude" versus Mario who has never really had a personality.

Sonic's classics are easily up there with Mario's. Sonic fell off after that though.

I had to vote Mario off of the strength of Super Mario Bros. 3 alone, plus he's the dude I grew up with
On top of that, Mario had been good before Sonic existed and stayed consistently good even after Sonic's falloff.
Sonic 2 and Sonic 3&K are still fire though. The latter is a top 10 game of all time for sure.

Mario is clearly the superior franchise. Super Mario 1, 2, 3, Snes Mario with Yoshi, Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. He dominated on every level of the nintendo consoles. Never faded away. Got Mario Kart named after him too. shyt's ballin.
