Yeah I think that happened while he was walking out the door already basically...they were splitting and as part of the negotiations he asked full ownership of the RD masters (him, dame and biggs all had partial ownership) in return for their rights to use the Roc-A-Fella name...on some divorce settlement type shyt...they had fallen out already regardless

ah i see.

this might look stupid but lets say if a label wanted to sign me and they hand me the contract to sign, could i say i want to own everything whilst my lawyer or manager is present? like i want my 100% publishing and masters?

They (the label) have nothing to do with your publishing (unless ur Mike Caren or LA Reid:whistle:).

As far as getting ur masters, more than likely, NO. Unless you have enough leverage where ur big enough to demand that then no.

Masters are one of the main component to a label. That's initially what their investment (advance) is in. They will try their hardest to retain the masters. Back in the day, before these 360 deals, the labels where spending millions marketing and building the brands of these artist. When the labels build them up big enough and an artist chooses to leave, they (labels) have to retain something.

:ohhh: so not givin him the masters wuz more of a spite thing probaly...hard to fault em for that, seein as the name rocafella wuz pretty useless without Jay...jay shoulda took rocafella with em instead of usin rocnation...maybe he didn't wanna damage the rocafella legacy...and with the acts he's signed so far he would've done just that

This man hit on the head. nikkas gotta realize that just cause they own your masters doesnt necessarily make it a bad thing. nikkas need to understand that a record label is a business. They are risking their money in order to get you exposure and put your brand out there. They have to get some kind of return on their investment. Not saying all their practices are well-mannered but thats business in general. Their goal is to invest money in a product (the artist) and make s much money as possible. Whether or not the artists makes money is no concern of the label (well it should be because if a rapper is bragging about balling and poppin bottles best believe ppl want to seem him ballin and poppin bottles). When I say it may not be a bad thing is because its a tradeoff, they providing their service and return want something from the artist. Now the means they go about doing it is a whole other story. Thats why nikkas need to have they management/consulting/lawyer game on point (its goin cost some bread but it'll save your ass in the longrun), and they also shouldnt have any of these nikkas be the same people, shyt is a big conflict in interest.

Def Jam owns rocafella. Jay could not take the name.
