So, I'm rewatching the game. A couple random ass thoughts:
*Patrick is a solid player, but he needs to be featured less if you're trying to have this quick and explosive offense. His lumbering style just doesn't fit. There's a play in the 2nd quarter where he ran for 17 yards. I think Akers or Khalan score there. shyt was wide open. Let him play the 2013 James Wilder short yardage back, role.
*I think our defense will be pretty solid. I don't think they will be great. Overall, we're small and I really can't believe our LB situation is as bad as it is. shyt is crazy. It's why I wanted Peters at LB still. Dudes like Adonis shouldn't be STARTING at FSU. He should be a special teams guys. Also, I don't think VT's offense is good. They left a lot of plays and points on the field that better offenses will capitalize on. Our CB's struggle to find the ball.
*About the offense, I voiced concerns in here before the season about how "simple" our offense was going to be. I still think Willie is going to have to adjust it. It's going to have to be more vertical and less horizontal. With that being said, most of the plays I didn't feel like were bad conceptually, but more so bad as far as personnel packaging. You can't have DJ as your lead blocker on pass to the flats to a TE, or Noonie as your lead blocker. You can't put the players in positions that their skillset doesn't support. Additionally, the teams that have really been successful with these offenses, it's just not the speed of which they get plays off. It's the setting up big plays by giving different looks out of the same formation(s). Oregon killed us with quick stuff, short and wide shyt, and then we were tried to stop that it was fake quick stuff for long gains down the seams or on the outside. They start hitting us with pump and go's which were of course wide ass open. They can be extremely effective. However, we didn't set one play up on Monday night.
With that being said, what I DON'T like about these offenses is that even in short yardage situations you're going to be in the shotgun -- which is wild to me. You're never going to just say, "It's 3rd and 1. Let's get in the I and get a yard." I feel like a pro-style offense could pair with spread elements just fine (see Charlie Ward and the Fast Break offense), but that a spread HUNH is never going to be able to do the former - if that makes sense. Clemson is never going to be able to come out and play a drive like Alabama would, but Alabama could play a drive like Clemson if they wanted to.
*Gavin has to make that catch. It's surreal how we have guys that are supposedly all world in practice, but when the lights come on the can't shine. How VT got converted QB's and shyt that can make diving interceptions look effortless, but our CB that supposedly was incredible in camp can't catch a ball thrown right at him?
*For every play that Noonie makes he flubs two. I'm thankful for his play in the Orange Bowl, but I'm also legit cool with the young guys getting his PT.
*Francois is Francois. He's a guy that can play really well for short periods of time, but is overall inconsistent. He's never been able to play well for the entirety of a game. He seems to play well about two quarters a game.
I think this is a 7-8 win team. I think that's what I said when people were talking about we're going to win 10 games, and I was asking what's realistic?
