I’ve always wondered this myself, but in the years past I’ve learned/realized

1: The mentality back then was that the championship title closed the show

Nobody talks about HHH ending Jericho’s poorly booked title reign (which was him keeping the belt warm for HHH), everyone talks about Rock vs Hogan 1 when they talk about X8

Back in 2002, before he returned, they thought Cripple H's return as a face was gonna be massive .like he was gonna join Rock and Austin as a SUPER DRAW. By the first Smackdown after he returned, he was already getting WHAT chants and then feuded with Steph with Jericho masquerading as a champion..even though he was walking dogs...lol

If Jericho (who was an internet smark darling then) didn't main event 18 the IWC would have been crying like a MF'er. Yes, the feud sucked and yes looking back HHH/Jericho holds not a candle to Rock/Hogan, but the thought of a championship match not closing out WM in 2002 would have caused so much uproar lol.

Same thing if WWE were to have two legends in the main event for WM next year instead of whoever the internet favorite champ is, there would be complaints. Not like 2002 level, but still complaints.

at WWE caring about what the IWC opinion was in 2002. Cmon breh, that had nothing to do with why Jericho-HHH last. Triple H wanted his Mania title moment to close the show, simple as that. Nobody remembers that shyt and that probably pisses him off but that’s another story .

I'm not saying that was THE reason WWE chose to have HHH-Jericho main event. Though I don't think HHH power was that strong during that time with Austin and Rock still around.

What I'm saying is people would have been complaining about Rock-Hogan main eventing, no matter how amazing it was, cuz they would have ran with the "Jericho deserves better" argument. You gotta remember, Jericho was the internet fan darling of the time.

Triple H had pull based on the fact he was dating Stephanie at the time and he knew all the tricks from the Kliq. You can’t tell me him going over the Rock all those times in 2000 for the title wasn’t him pulling strings as well good back-and-forth feud booking. Like I posted said earlier, Jericho was given to title to put over Triple H, sure him being a IWC darling made it easier to put him in that spot, but he was given the title as a thank you imo.

Before Cripple H bombed, the IWC definitely thought Cripple H was the best...Benoit and Eddie were worshipped too. Jericho had alot of Marks but not on that level.
