Finished the last 2 eps, wild how Leonard and Hearns were only 32 & 30 for their rematch and they were considered washed, Crawford and Spence are older than that now
Another difference I noticed between then and now is that even when fighters were still winning they were considered washed and people were telling them to retire. shyt they were telling Duran to retire after he took the two losses after losing to Sugar Ray. I don't know if it was just more honesty back then or the fighters were just judged more harshly but it seemed any declining of skills and the fighters were being put out to pasture.

It does make me sad over the current state of boxing though seeing how much the Four Kings pushed themselves to legit fight the best out even late in their careers and how early they took on the tough challengers. Now it seems the up and comers handlers just milk that undefeated record and hold on to that star power as long as they can before putting them in the ring against a real challenger. That's why I loved Teo challenging Loma so quickly or even Canelo going after Mayweather so early in his career. If a fighter is truly great they can recover and bounce back from a loss.

Boxing not ever coming together and getting and official governering body is what’s killing it. It’s easier for Logan Paul to get a top fighter than it is for the people who should be getting these matches.

But at the same time Hagler was proof back then that without the media personality no one gives a shyt about how good you are. These new dudes are like hagler and they have a hard time forcing the big fights because they aren’t popular enough

I think a huge part of the problem is promoter's greed and chasing short term greed versus building the sport. I think having a barrier to entry to any sport hurts its chances of growing and attracting new viewers. So needing to have a premium cable subscription, or a subscription to an app, or having to buy a PPV just to watch hurts the chances of getting curiosity views and limits it mainly to the more hardcore of fans. It limits the chances of A lot of the fighters breaking out. But going the PPV and app route guarantees more upfront money for each fight. Even if they want to go the PPV route I'd still love if they found a way to rebroadcast great fights on cable TV and put marketing behind introducing casuals to the best of the sport to try and spark their interest. With so many other entertainment options I think they need to find a way to expand the sport and move away from the old model.

As far as Hagler he reminds me of Terrance Crawford. For most fighters they need that fight with a crossover star to crossover themselves. Some fighters have an exciting enough style and personality that they generate word of mouth hype. Others will only get exposed by people seeing them fight a huge names which is why Hagler didn't became a huge name until fighting Hearnes. I think if Spence has a great showing against Pac he has that chance to cross over too which is why I was hoping him or Crawford got the fight. That was the biggest downside of Floyd never losing is that no other fighter got the rub off of beating him.

gonna watch episode 2 today. Episode 1 was :ohlawd:, I did not know Duran had that Latino street thug personality. He always came off as the good humble guy watching his fights. Then again it made me realize I never heard him talk until that documentary.

Fighters fought way more back then and they actually fought other elite fighters so their primes were shorter.

you can say that about hearns...but sugar ray had the least amount of fights from the 4..significantly

He fought Benitez, Duran and Hearns. His resume shyts on every modern welterweight significantly. The Duran and Hearns fights probably took years off his life.

he also has a significant drop off in number of fights after 82. esp trying to come back from a detached retina and all plus drug use
