Looking at the competition:
Nas is better then Jay, Big and Pac. It's not even really debatable anymore. Pac might've ended up being better if he hadn't been taken from us too soon. Big never would've. Jay has one hot album since Black Album in '03. In that time Nas has dropped HHID, SD and LiG. Jay just has AG. Ice Cube hasn't done anything hot in a while either.
Nas' music has held up a lot better then Rakim, Kool G Rap or any other late 80's/early 90's GOAT contender.
Eminem is the most talented rapper from a pure technical perspective. His 1999-2003 run is still untouchable, but he hasn't had a hot album since then. Encore was decent. Relapse and Recovery were garbage.
So yeah from the beginning of his career to the end Nas is the GOAT. Em still has the best 5 year run and I believe to still be more talented. But off of overall material released Nas is the GOAT.

la reid signed nas from what i remember. jay being president was a bad look for nas. jay is a better business man, but nas is the better rapper. elevating jay for his business skill, in a discussion about goat rapper. and just cause you lose a battle doesn't mean your career is over either. people were getting tired of ja, 50 just pushed it along.
I'm nowhere near 40, but can respect what Cube has done. Death Certificate alone kills most other rappers careers.

I don't believe in there being ONE G.O.A.T. to be honest. I think there are artists who belong amongst that elite group, and then there's everyone else... but not just one.

When we rule out everybodys opinions except for black peoples its safe to say Pac wins this by a large margin.
I think 2pac is probably the overall consensus G.O.A.T, from any race.
The fact he is dead feeds this general opinion although.
In my opinion.. in 96, Nas, Biggie, 2pac, and Jay Z were all just about equal. Whichever one of them died then would be hailed as the obvious G.O.A.T's today.

Only way I can see Jay having it is due to a long career without any breaks and his power moves that he makes. Still he has a power to change history and that's a no no.

Nas might not be legendary like Pac or be popular like Jay is now but he still got it. He is the only rapper that do not dress and act like a 17 year old teenager. He is Cosby status, and that is not a bad thing. What I'm saying is that when you get old you should want to talk and address things as what your age is versus acting like a teenager on records all the time. Yeah LIG might not be illmatic or stillmatic but an album coming from his age and point of view now shows a lot. I salute him.

I aint even talkin bout Jay signing Nas, that has nothing to do with skills. Like I said before Jay-Z is obviously the better businessman but when it comes to Mic skills Nas been the GOAT since Illmatic
