Disney Channel star and singer Zendaya will not play Aaliyah in a Lifetime Television movie after all.

A rep for the 17-year-old actress told E! News exclusively on Sunday, June 29, that "Zendaya is no longer involved in the project." Lifetime, which had announced her casting in the biopic on June 16, has not commented.

A source told E! News that there were production issues, including problems obtaining the rights to Aaliyah's music. The R&B star and Queen of the Damned actress died at age 22 in a plane crash on Aug. 25, 2001.

"Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya," the source said. "She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right."

Lifetime had said that the tentative title of the movie was Aaliyah: Princess of R&B and that the biopic will be based off of Christopher Farley's best-selling biography Aaliyah: More Than a Woman. The project was set to begin filming in the summer and air this fall.

The movie depicts Aaliya's life and career, from her debut on Star Search to her rise to fame and, finally, her tragic passing, which shocked the world. Scores of fans pay tribute to her online, especially on Twitter, on the anniversary of her death.

Zendaya, whose full name is Zendaya Coleman and who has a massive online fan following, played Rocky Blue on the Disney Channel series Shake It Up! between 2010 and 2013. That final year, she also competed on Dancing With The Stars. On Friday, the Disney Channel aired her latest project, the movie Zapped, which drew 5.7 million viewers. She can be seen next in the channel's new series, KC Undercover, which she also co-produced and which is expected to premiere in 2015.

Zendaya was this year nominated for her first BET Award—the YoungStar Award. She is set to attend the 2014 BET Awards, which airs live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

I remember the outrage of Jennifer Lopez (Puerto Rican) being cast to play Selena (Mexican American)

I guess they never get the women right.

It's a shame that someone like this was ever considered for the part.

Again you're not black nor do you know what you're talking about. There are no dark-skinned biracials, whatever you think to the contrary. Zoe Saldana does not look like Nina Simone. That much is obvious. Aside, Aliyah was a black girl that did treatments to herself (or had treatment done to her) to appear lighter and more beautiful. However her original appearance is not unlike many AAs:

She's a black girl and must be played by a black girl. Period.

If this girl was cast as Aaliyah, there would be no controversy

Aaliyah has 2 Black parents and looks like a fair skinned Black girl. She would never be confused for Mexican.

And phenotype is a but a component of race.

Nope, she will go for what White people give her and since she is half-Cac that is more than what they will give full Blacks and many times opportunities meant for full Blacks. It starts with Blacks acknowledging biracials are different (but still embracing) and controlling the media depiction of themselves.
So now only darker skinned blacks grow up poor now? Are all bi-racials ballin' then? :dead:

Look at all the progressions Poitier's arguments have made each time he's wrong y'all :laff:

1. Zoe Saldana was too light to play Nina Simone and Hollywood wouldn't let a bi-racial play a white person (proved wrong, also see the mother of Louis C.K's. on his show)
2. Skipped over to bi-racials aren't black
3. Said that Hollywood movie makers care more about the racial make up of your parents than what you look like
4. Said Evan Ross, Boris Kodjoe, and Lisa Bonet are just some of the premiere bi-racials taking popular and in-demand roles from darker skinned blacks such as the likes of Gabrielle Union, Idris Elba, Lupita, etc.
5. Is okay with Denzel playing Malcolm X, a BIRACIAL man. But doesn't like the inverse.

And that's only 5 deflections, transitions, and goal post movements. I just decided to stop myself there. :russ: Troll better next time loser, you're a disgrace. :mjlol:

:wtf: Malcolm X was not biracial.

Alexandra Shipp Replaces Zendaya In Aaliyah Biopic
Tanay Hudson Posted July 18, 2014

Lifetime switched from Disney to Nickelodeon to find their newest star of the Aaliyah biopic. Alexandra Shipp of Nickelodeon's House of Anubis has now been snagged to play the late singer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Shipp is replacing actress and singer Zendaya Coleman, who was originally chosen to play Aaliyah but backed out of the project late last month.

"It has to be done 120 percent, so I felt like it wasn't there, so it just wasn't a good choice for me," she said when she stepped down from the role.

Production is now off hold and the film, titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, is set to begin shooting this summer and hit the small screens this fall. The script is based off the book Aaliyah: More than a Woman by Christopher Farley.

Shipp is not the only addition. Wendy Williams took to Twitter Friday (July 18) to announce her role as the flick's executive producer.
