CoMC is one of my favorite books ever, and Dumas was badass.

His response to a journalist who asked him some semi-racist shyt:

i heard about this earlier this year on NPR.
the reason why there were 3 musketeers is because all the things the three of them did are reflections of Alexander Dumas's actions and accomplishments and the author did not think anyone would believe that a single man could have done all of the amazing things. therefore the author needed three men to represent the accomplishments of Dumas.

i think he rolled with Napoleon for a while and Napoleon was hating on him because Dumas would ride with him and people would assume that Dumas was in charge because he was so much bigger and carried himself in a very confidently.

if you search the NPR archive i'm sure you can find the audio clip.
