I was a teenager during the "conscious era" of hip hop, and LL caught some flack from other artists and some fans for not making conscious topic songs. The Walking With a Panther album probably sold well, but it was out of step with what other rappers were rapping about.

When 95% of rappers stopped rapping about issues because the conscious wave was over (and it didn't sell anymore), L.L. stood for last laugh, I guess.
