Other than watching a few Youtube videos not really.
I really don't know anything other than chopping up a sample so I could read a step by step book on producing to learn a few things.

Yea I noticed I do my chopping of the sample first. Then build around that.

Here's a Instrumental I just made using an Isley Brothers Sample.
Could you tell me what I am missing/maybe don't need?

A snare would make that shyt pop. and personally i would add some kind of higher pitch instrumental/sample in the background to accompany that primary sample. I would also add a a sub bass line. for some reason i think some conga/bongo's would be dope on this one.

Here's an example from one of my beats of the kind of bongo/conga sound i'm talking about.

But that's just the way I hear the sample. others would have different feedback because we all have a different approach. the best thing to do is play with a bunch of different sounds to find your style. even if you have to make a beat that's wack, at least go through the workflow to get comfortable with the whole process.

Also...what producers do you currently listen to and who is your influence?

I like Rza, DJ Paul, Madlib, Zaytoven. Kinda all over the place.
When you say ad a higher pitch sample, should I take another part from the original song I used for the primary sample?

When did I say that?
Where did I say I never had an interest in learning music?
I been rapping for years. Never been in a studio or met a producer. Just an empty room and a mic.
Everybody has a starting point
So you can shut the fukk up and go on another thread if you don't have anything to contribute.

Nice mix of artists. see if they have any videos making beats on YouTube. RZA definitely does.

As for the higher pitch sample, I'm not sure, you would have to play around with different sounds. Just a suggestion to add variety to the song...

i cant see the sample but what you do is lay ur chops down the way u want them. Then listen to the loop over and over and just listen for where the kicks would best fit. I like to make my kick line or whatever a bit sparse, i find that when you have too many kicks it makes the beat feel static. IF you space your kicks out a bit and kinda place them where the sample kinda transitions, the little pauses or gaps in sound. The best way to make your beat sound dynamic is to have your first kick at beat one, then ur next at the fourth beat. After that you can fill in but not too much. Then again it depends on the sample always.

Snare is almost always on the third beat each bar. After that people generally add high hats, usually closed. honestly i cant tell u how to do that part but hi hats establish rythem and you definatly dont want to have those too complicated, usually your find with just placing one at each beat or half beat.

So elements:kick, snare, hi hat. I like adding shakers also.

:whoa: surely you could see how you asking what a basic drum pattern consists of could've lead me to that conclusion?
indeed everyone has a starting point, i just think looking into the most base fundamentals of music is a better starting point than chopping up samples in reason without a complete understanding of a drum kit and what it's uses are. i'd say that's a contribution.
