Mayweather itching to return? Floyd says fight vs. Danny Garcia would bury Canelo-Khan
(most likely this was posted in the random thoughts thread but I aint diving around that bytch trying to find it)
Floyd Mayweather said his September shutout victory against Andre Berto would be the final fight of his storied career, but will he truly remain retired?
After all, he’s come back from retirement once already. He stepped away from the game following a December 2007 knockout of Ricky Hatton, but ended the hiatus to top Juan Manuel Marquez in September 2009. Most observers expect Mayweather, still at the top of his sport, to return once more for what would be another massive payday for a guy who calls himself “Money.”
Mayweather, who will turn 39 next week, hinted at such a comebackduring an interview with FightHype on Monday.
“You know, I can easily put a halt on (Canelo-Khan) if I chose to call Mr. Garcia, (Danny) Garcia’s dad,” Mayweather said of the May 7 HBO PPV middleweight championship fight. “If I chose to call him and say, ‘You know what, sir, you’re a hell of a trainer. Your son’s a hell of a fighter, he’s an undefeated champion, I’m an undefeated champion, and I think it would be great for me and your son both to make a lot of money. And like I said before, you’re very outspoken, my dad is very outspoken.’
“It would be good for me to come back for number 50 and fight the undefeated Danny Garcia, you know, at the MGM Grand. You know, since Danny Garcia is undefeated and he’s very explosive, he’s a very good fighter, and he really represents Puerto Rico the same way that (Felix) Trinidad (did). Even though he’s from Philadelphia, he represents the red, white, and blue for Puerto Rico. I’ll go over to the MGM Grand and say, ‘You know what? We need a venue also,’ and we’ll see (what happens).”
Mayweather, of course, has a frosty relationship with Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo Alvarez. His talk of fighting Garcia could simply be a dig at De La Hoya and nothing more. And there’s no love lost between Mayweather and Amir Khan, who repeatedly called for a fight with the pound-for-pound kingpin but never was able to secure it.
But do you really believe Mayweather won’t go for No. 50, to surpass Rocky Marciano’s hallowed mark of 49-0 and put a nice bow on his Hall of Fame career? We’re playing the waiting game, and talk like that, with an opponent in mind, will only serve to power the rumor mill.
“Because if I’m not mistaken, I fought Canelo, right, and then Danny Garcia fought Amir Khan, and we’re both undefeated, so who do you want to see?” said Mayweather, who easily beat Canelo in 2013. The 27-year-old Garcia knocked out Khan in the fourth round of their 2012 meeting. “Do you want to see them or do you want to see us? I’m just saying, I’m just putting it out there. Those are the type of things that I can do.”
Don’t bank on a fight between Mayweather and Garcia taking place in May, but September seems like a real possibility for No. 50.
