@ posters using the unsubstantiated "Well everybody does it..." claims
to defend Drake
Not every rapper is on that and I'm certain many of the rappers I rock with don't
have a pool of song writers to draw from. This isn't pop music where you got
dozens of different writers supplying all your material. This is HIP HOP, Dre and Ye
get a pass but I'd look at Nas, Jay-Z, Big. etc. in an entirely different light if they were
receiving significant help on their records (as in receiving records like Katy Perry.
)
If you're collaborating cool but if you essentially had no hand in it's direction then it's hard
to look at as you as a "Rapper" in my opinion.
If you can't sing and collab with a singer ? Cool.
If you can't make beats and you collab with a beat maker ? Cool.
If you can't producer/engineer and you need someone to mix/master the final product ? Cool.
But if you're receiving/buying songs I don't take that as YOU being the "Song writer", you had no input.
I agree. I dont understand why has long been accepted in EVERY other genre of music, but when it comes to rap, fans expect their favorite rapper or producer to perform and create 100% of everything they put out without ANY outside assistance. that kinda thinking is dumb when you really think about it.
It's not unique to Hip Hop at all actually, it's expected in rock circles as well.
They don't respect you as a "Band" if you aren't really writing your songs.
I've seen it on metal/rock forums I frequent.
You'll also see a distinct distaste for Pop in those circles as well something that's
eroded over time in Hip Hop circles for various reasons.
In most other genres the talent is being able to sing, maybe play an instrument, or even dancing. Rapping you're talking to a beat, not a high hurdle to clear, plus your rep is built (back in the day at least) on you displaying your lyrical skills..,what sets you apart. It's not hard to see why writers are looked down on in the genre.
Depends on what you're doing.
Rapping like G-Rap/Big Pun/Tech N9ne/Elzhi is most definitely a high hurdle
to clear, rapping like OG Maco/Lil B/Chief Keef not so much.
