Its hardly an argument on semantics. I'm not going to stop spending money some place because they don't support gay marriage. Maybe if I felt stronger about it, I might. But even then, it doesn't really make a difference. Spending money there may mean that some of it goes to groups behind things I don't believe in.

But there is a difference between that and going there in an attempt to show my support for something. I don't see how protesting and using my voice to show people I agree with them is less powerful than throwing a few dollars their way here and there.

I am not supporting their motives or their morals or their agenda. Just like I'm not supporting homosexuals getting beheaded in the middle east when I fill up my tank. Just like I don't support children getting worked to death in sweat shops when I cop a new pair of Nikes. I am spending my money on a good. What they do with it at that point is regardless to me and in their control. If you spend money at some place with the idea in your head that you're supporting whatever cause that company is known to back, then you're going to have issues.

Support is support. You're funding oppression when you purchase electronics and petroleum products. You are allowing these regimes and companies to continue their agendas of repression, oppression and death. You're openly supporting oppression in some way, which is part of any way.
