Historically speaking it was common for white men to take mixed-race mistresses. In Jim Crow and Pre-Civil War South this was a open secret (including other places, but we're only talking about Northern America).

Most married men don't have mistresses...They may bonk whatever they can find here and there, but most married men (of any race) don't keep mistresses...
(2) Men with higher socio-economic standing are the ones who typically keep mistresses...They can afford to...And most men are working class, so higher class men are a minority...
