i wouldnt be surprised if there are ppl out there who literally couldnt name 1 MLB player. i mean you dont even have to be a sports fan to know atleast a few NFL & NBA players. Does 2 of the brightest stars in Strasberg and Harper even have a commercial?? RG3 havent thrown 1 single pass yet professionaly and i cant turn the channel without seeing his mug

could MLB do a better job showcasing individual players? Yes.

Is it the kind of sport that is as conducive to marketing the individual player? MLB would rather market the teams and push that. Besides, if the players get any individual pub, it's usually done locally. There's pros and cons to it. The baseball fan isn't clueless to these guys but the casual fan is (and considering what has happened to the NBA, that might be a good thing, not as many fanboys dikkriding off the strength of one guy).

For real. It's actually kinda sad when one of your 2 most marketable players has been retired for a couple years.

Everybody still rocks Griffeys and a lot of players still use his gear.

I can care less about the marketing of individual players in baseball. Teams>>>>>Players. Just look at The NBA; teams and rivalries took a back seat to the dikkriding of star players. You got dudes hugging each other in The Finals like it's some meaningless NBA regular season game.

because frankly once they are stars, they get paid like that and then some, lessening the need for endorsement money

Great thread..

The current MLB is horrible in terms of marketing their star players..I remember watching the Home Run Derby and not knowing a single player..

I wont call myself a casual baseball fan, but it was bad that I couldnt recall a single player. This is due to the poor marketing from MLB..

I actually think alot of sponsors and MLB are scared to back a certain player because of the risk of banned substance use..They dont want to interest alot of money into a player and then he gets exposed for juicing..

McGuire and Sosa were the last marketable players and we see how they turned out..
