I'm already working for a non-profit agency and meeting/attending their meetings/assisting in policy with their higher ups and I haven't even graduated yet. You're doing something wrong or simply not looking...

I remember @BarNone was already washing dishes, interning at his states' capitol, during junior year in college.

That can be tricky. It depends on who you intern for. If say you would have interned for Linda McMahon you most likely would have never met her and they would have had you doing rat work at best. It's best to intern for someone like a state rep where you can really learn something and speak with them on a weekly basis.

I never interned in the state of Rhode Island while in college. I was always in DC. Which is why all my experiences are based on capitol hill.

Anyhow, choosing my major was easy. I went to Michigan knowing that every program was a top 20 program at worse and that it's political science program was top 5. So basically I took courses in political science because I was interested in it and I flirted with history, sociology, english, CAAS, and philosophy (eventually picked this up as a minor). It really more of an international relations concentration. But at the end of the day, I kind of always had it in the back of my head that I was going to law school. If I didn't, I had a job waiting for me at the US Senate Office in DC as a staffer for one of three Senators. That or I would've worked for a non-profit, teach for america or this other pretty big company that was trying to send the kid to hong kong on one of the rotations :usure:

But at the end of the day Teach for America turned me off by basically saying they needed me because they needed a smart black kid from the inner city to go teach black kids from the inner city. They were really direct about me being black playing a role. In the end, I realized, I wasn't a teacher anyway. Sure, I'd probably would've made history or english interesting for this kids, but my heart wasn't in it. But I hesitated so long that I got less scholarship money than I should have by letting the initial offer expire. But I got it back later :shaq:

:heh: Teach for America thought I was their MVP!!! WOOO They had me starting off at Pioneer, then wanted me to go to Flint and Saginaw. I come from those areas, I sure as hell don't want to teach there! LOL But leaving Michigan with a English degree didn't hurt when I started thinking about grad schools. My only problem in life....was I needed the money to do it. Student Loans....:why:

You mean it did lol.

I was talking to someone else in law school about it (a latina girl) and she had the same story. Being black almost never works on your favor though. Definitely not in the legal profession. So much of moving up is just politics. I see it at my firm everyday and I look at this one black chick like, "If you say some cornball shyt like geez louise guys" one more time :rudy: I'm not going out like that lol. I texted her yesterday and told her "Harriet didn't go underground for this." She gave me the :beli:

Yeah man. I threatened to transfer to get my scholarship back. They then proceeded to toss me 30k a year for my last two years.

:upsetfavre: they didn't tell me about dt's until i had already left my other job. honestly, there are not many opportunities for liberal arts grads aside from graduate school, sales, teaching and admin work.

when i was in high school in the 90s liberal arts college degrees were actually decent investments.

everything changed in the years that i was in college.
