Neo soul = real r&b. In my opinion, that title was given to music in the late 90s and early 2000s due to so much r&b sounding like hip hop. So basically neo soul just means real r&b music. Just like r&b today has been combined with hip hop on the billboards because a lot of it is singers singing in double time over trap beats. The same thing with this genre called "lofi". Lofi is basically the sampled dusty hip hop primo, pete rock, madlib, and others have done for decades.
