Bong Joon-hoβs Snowpiercer opened in the directorβs native South Korea last week, and will continue to roll out around the world for the next couple of months. It has broken box-office records at home and is very well-reviewed across the board. But despite having a distributor in The Weinstein Co., the film has yet to announce a U.S. opening date. Now we know what the holdup is.
The notoriously scissor-happy Harvey Weinstein reportedly has plans to chop up Snowpiercer, reducing its running time by about 20 minutes. And itβs not because the filmβs bloated or unwieldy. Itβs because in his opinion, according to one report, Midwesterners are too stupid to understand the movie as-is. Hit the jump for more about the edits.
IF.com (via Twitch) learned of Weinsteinβs plans from film critic and programmer Tony Rayns. βTWC people have told Bong that their aim is to make sure the film βwill be understood by audiences in Iowaβ¦ and Oklahoma,ββ he said. The cuts will remove much of the character work to make the film play more like a traditional action movie. In addition, voiceovers will be added to the beginning and end of the film.

It looks like a great movie. Did you hear about the fact that the director refuses to cut scenes out, but unless he does, they won't play it in the US because they think that Americans (Midwesterners, to be specific) are too stupid to understand it as-is.
I wanna see it! Chris Evans

Where did you watch it? Link?Just saw the movie and I thought it was great. It has a very unique vibe which mixes the off-beat humorous social satire of European comics (the source material) with the dark, cynical human nature of Korean film making. An open mind is required to fully appreciate it and I can see why it made Harvey Weinstein scissor-happy, because a lot of people won't swallow what the movie has to offer. Those people can go fukk themselves though for as much as I care because the direction by Bong Joon-ho is unwithfukkable. The first hour and a half or so moves at a rapid pace with intense action set pieces that hit hard without overly relying on violence and gore to sell them. The last half hour is a bit talky, perhaps too much even, but the 90 minutes before it are filled with details that only become relevant then, so all the pieces need to be put together properly and I can't really imagine how they could've done it differently.
