I grew up on SNK fighting games and Neo Geo CD, so I won't tolerate any SNK bad mouthing.
That said, SNK did create the OG fighting game fakkit who couldn't have been any less loud & proud about his zesty sexuality. How many of y'all remember dat (batty) boy Benimaru though?
Him and Voldo (Soul Caliber) were 2 of the coziest characters to hit the arcade in the 1990s.

Benimaru had female friends who he could act somewhat sexual with on the level that girls who are friends act sexual with each other. If you dressed like Benimaru anywhere but Christopher Street back when that character debuted, you were gonna get gay-bashed indiscriminately.

If his character had debuted in Fighting Street (only real gamers know about SF 1) I'd agree with you.
By the mid 90s, the androgynous look (along with glam rock) was no longer the wave so dressing like a fakkit meant 9.9 times out of 10, you were a tried-and-true fakkit. Even Prince couldn't survive the streets unscathed when he debuted his booty-out jeans. In the 80s we would have debated those jeans within the context of individual expression during the decade of Reagan, but by the 90s real ones said: "This dude might just be a lil' nasty (shout out to Dwight Howard)," within the context of Clinton America, grunge music, and former members of NWA trading homoerotic barbs at any given moment. (Wait... what???)
And I'm not trying to low-key diss Prince, I'm moreso trying to let nikkas know Benimaru, while he was a good character who could wreck shop with the best of them, while he was a valuable member of any team within the King of Fighters tournament, was a high-key fakkit. Voldo also fit this mold.
Vega also came off as one of them "A hole is a hole" ass nikkas too. Just sayin'
